List of Winner of T20 World Cup (2007-2022)
Hey guys , today I will be sharing the list of winner of T20 world cup of all the seasons starting right from the inaugural 2007 world cup to the last world cup held in Australia , 2022 . Before we move to the list , we must know a little bit about the history and basic terms of the T20 format :
Twenty20 FORMAT
- Twenty20 (T20) is a shortened game format of cricket where the two teams have a single innings each, of 20 overs only . At the professional level, it was introduced by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in 2003 for the inter-county competition.
- Twenty20 is one of the three current forms of cricket recognised by the International Cricket Council (ICC) as being at the highest international or domestic level including Test and ODI format .
- A typical Twenty20 game is completed in about three hours, with each innings lasting around 90 minutes .
- The first Twenty20 International match was held on 5 August 2004 between the England and New Zealand women’s teams, with New Zealand winning by nine runs .
- On 17 February 2005 Australia defeated New Zealand by 44 runs in the first men’s international Twenty20 match, played at Eden Park in Auckland . Ricky Ponting made 98* runs in just 55 balls and took his team total to 214 runs .
- After 2 years in 2007 , it was decided that every two years an ICC World Twenty20 tournament is to take place . But in case a Cricket World Cup got scheduled in the same year, it will be held the year before . This is why one of the T20 World Cup was played in 2010 instead of 2011 .
- The ICC put forward the idea of having a tournament in 2018, with South Africa hosting it . But at the conclusion of the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, the ICC dropped the idea of 2018 edition.
- Seven tournaments have so far been played i.e. in 2007,09,10,12,14,16 and 21 . So without any further delay , let’s move straight to the ICC T20 world cup list of winners (2007-2021) .
ICC T20 World Cup List of Winners (2007 – 2022)
1. INDIA – 2007 World Cup vs Pakistan

The 2007 ICC World Twenty20 was the inaugural Twenty20 International cricket world championship, contested in South Africa from 11 to 24 September 2007. Twelve teams took part in the thirteen-day tournament—the ten Test-playing nations, Kenya and Scotland.
India won the cup defeating Pakistan by 5 runs in the final at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. The very first final of T20 world cup became very dramatic at the end and was a thriller match . This was the start T20’s wanted to expand rapidly in the future .
1ST INNINGS –
- MS Dhoni won the toss and chose to bat .India lost their opening wicket in the third over .Settling down, Gautam Gambhir played his shots . On the other end, Umar Gul took crucial wickets of Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni .
- Rohit Sharma made some late-order hitting which brought India to 157 for 5 in the twenty overs , only Gautam Gambhir (75 from 54 balls) produced a notable innings. . For Pakistan, Gul was the best of the bowlers as he took three wickets .
2ND INNINGS –
- Irfan Pathan (3/16), RP Singh (3/26) and Joginder Sharma (2/20) bowled good spells . With Pakistan needing 54 from 24 balls, Misbah-ul-Haq dispatched Harbhajan Singh for 3 sixes in one over and Sreesanth for 2 sixes, as Pakistan went into the last over needing 13 runs to win, with only 1 wicket remaining.
- Joginder Sharma bowled the last over and a wide first ball, followed by a dot ball. Misbah followed by taking six off a full-toss; Pakistan needed 6 runs to win from four balls. Misbah attempted to hit the next ball with a paddle-scoop over fine leg, but was caught at short fine-leg by Sreesanth, leaving Pakistan all out for 152 runs with 3 balls remaining .
Irfan Pathan was awarded the Man of the Match for his spell, which included 3 wickets for 16 runs, including that of Man of the Series, Shahid Afridi. India made history by winning the first ever T20 World Cup which marked the rise of ” New India ” under the captaincy of MS Dhoni .

2. PAKISTAN – 2009 World Cup vs Sri Lanka

- The 2009 ICC T20 World Cup took place in England from 5 to 21 June 2009 . As before, the tournament featured 12 teams – nine of the ten Test-playing nations and three associate nations .
- The final took place at Lord’s in London on Sunday 21 June with Pakistan beating Sri Lanka by eight wickets .
MATCH SUMMARY –
- Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat. Angelo Mathews (35 runs) along with Sangakkara (64 runs) took the score from 70/6 to 138/6, with 17 runs being scored off the last over bowled by Mohammad Amir. Sri Lanka finished on 138/6 from 20 overs. Abdul Razzaq took the most (3 wickets) for Pakistan .
- Pakistan started off well with openers Kamran Akmal and Shahzaib Hasan adding 48 runs for the 1st wicket. Pakistan reached the target comfortably in 18.4 overs with 8 wickets in hand, with Shahid Afridi, who hit the winning runs, earning Man of the Match (for 54 runs and 1 wicket) . Tillakaratne Dilshan was declared Man of the Series for his 317 runs at an average of 63.40.

3. ENGLAND – 2010 T20 World Cup vs Australia

This ICC 2010 World Twenty20 took place only 10 months after the last one from 30 April to 16 May. It was hosted by the countries making up the West Indies cricket team. As before, the tournament featured 12 teams – ten Test-playing nations and two qualifiers.
England defeated Australia in the final in Barbados on 16 May, which was played at Kensington Oval, winning their first international tournament. England won by seven wickets with three overs to spare to seal its first International Cricket Council world championship after losses in three World Cup finals.
MATCH SUMMARY –
- England won the toss and chose to field . Australia scored 147 runs for the loss of six wickets . David Hussey top scored with 59 runs after England had reduced the Aussies to 8/3 in 2.1 overs. Ryan Sidebottom took 2 Wickets for England .
- England chased Australia’s total with 18 balls to spare, reaching 148 runs for the loss of three wickets . Craig Kieswetter (63 runs) and Kevin Pietersen (47 runs) did a 111-run partnership for the second wicket before captain Paul Collingwood hit the winning run.
Kevin Pietersen was subsequently named Man of the Tournament having scored 248 runs, while Kieswetter was named Man of the Match having scored his first T20 international half-century in the final.

4. WEST INDIES – 2012 World Cup vs Sri Lanka

The fourth tournament, the 2012 World Twenty20, was held in Asia for the first time, that took place in Sri Lanka from 18 September to 7 October 2012 . The format had four groups of three teams in a preliminary round.
2012 ICC World Twenty20 Final was played between Sri Lanka and West Indies at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on 7 October .This was the first time where a host team (SL) qualified for the final . West Indies won the 2012 ICC World Twenty20 by 36 runs .
1ST INNINGS –
- West Indies captain Darren Sammy won the toss and chose to bat first . Batting First, West Indies suffered an early collapse as they were 2–14 after 5.5 overs, resulting 14 runs after the end of batting powerplay . Later then Marlon Samules played a knock of 78 from 55 balls including the longest six of the tournament at 108 meters.
- Captain Darren Sammy also produced a small, but valuable knock of 26 runs of just 15 balls. West Indies added 108 runs in the last 10 overs resulting to respectable score of 137 with the loss of 6 wickets and thus able to set Sri Lanka a target of 138. Ajantha Mendis took 4 Wickets for Sri Lanka giving just 12 runs away .
2ND INNINGS –
- In reply Sri Lanka also did not get good start and were restricted to 39/1 after eight overs. With the fall of Wicketkeeper batsman Kumar Sangakara on the score of 48 in 10th over , just in span of 21 runs Sri Lankans were reduced to 69/7 in 14.3 overs including the two run outs. Nuwan Kulasekara gave a fightback (26 runs from 16 balls) but Sri Lanka was soon all out on 101 in 18.4 overs resulted in 36 runs short of the target.
Captain Mahela Jayawardhane was the top scorer of 33 runs whereas Sunil Narine produced a brilliant figures of 9-3 in 3.4 overs. Samuels was judged as Man of the Match for his match defining 78 runs and 1–15 in his four overs of bowling.

5. SRI LANKA – 2014 T20 World Cup vs India

- The fifth tournament, the 2014 ICC World Twenty20, was hosted by Bangladesh, which was played from 16 March to 6 April 2014. For the first time, the tournament featured 16 teams. All ten full members joined by the six associate members which are Ireland, Afghanistan, Netherlands and making their World Twenty20 debut the UAE, Nepal and Hong Kong.
- The 2014 ICC World Twenty20 Final was played between India and Sri Lanka at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka on 6 April 2014. Sri Lanka won the match by six wickets, its first World Twenty20 victory, after being runners-up twice at 2009 and 2012. Sri Lanka became the first team to play in three finals .
- Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to field first. India made 130 runs for the loss of 4 Wickets in 20 overs, with Virat Kohli 77 (58) being the major contributor . Rangana Herath took 1/23 (4 overs) for Sri Lanka
- Chasing 131 runs in 20 Overs , Sri Lanka made 134/4 in just 17.5 overs. Kumar Sangakkara made 52 not out off just 35 balls while Mohit Sharma took 1/18 (2 overs) for India .Sri Lanka won by 6 wickets. Kumar Sangakkara (SL) was awarded the Player of the match . Virat Kohli was named as the Player of the Tournament for his 319 runs .
- This was the last Twenty20 International for Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene .

6. WEST INDIES – 2016 T20 World Cup vs England

The sixth tournament, the 2016 ICC World Twenty20, was hosted from 8 March to 3 April 2016 by India . For the second time there were sixteen participating teams .
The 2016 ICC World Twenty20 Final was played at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on 3 April 2016 to determine the winners of the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 between England and the West Indies .The West Indies won the match by 4 wickets, thus becoming the first team to win the ICC World Twenty20 twice .The match recorded the highest attendance ever for an ICC World T20 Finals.
1ST INNINGS –
- West Indies won the toss and elected to field. The West Indies started well with bowling Roy for a duck with just the second ball and Alex Hales in the second over. Morgan got out off Badree to leave England at 3/23 after 4.4 overs. Root helped England climb back into the game with 54 off 36. Dwayne Bravo then took two wickets in three balls dropping England from 110/4 to 111/7. However , England managed to finish at 155/9 after their 20 overs.
2ND INNINGS –
- Root bowled the second over of the West Indian innings and dismissed both Gayle and fellow opener Johnson Charles. Willey had Simmons out LBW for a golden duck leaving the West Indies 11/3 in the third over. A partnership of 75 between Bravo and Samuels kept the West Indies in the game and needed 45 runs from the last 4 overs. Eventually , they needed 19 runs from the final over and Brathwaite hit four consecutive sixes off the first 4 balls from Ben Stokes to seal the win.
Samuels finished with an unbeaten 85 off 66, the highest score in World Twenty20 final history. Brathwaite broke the record for the most runs by a single batsman in the final over of a successful chase (Brathwaite’s 24 beating Michael Hussey’s 22 for Australia off Pakistan’s Saeed Ajmal in the 2010 semifinals in St. Lucia).
West Indies also became the first to win 2 men’s World Twenty20s and the first to win both the women’s and men’s tournaments on the same day. Samuels earned Man of the Match for his 85 not out for his second World Twenty20 final Man of the Match and his second final half century. Virat Kohli was named Man of the Tournament for the second consecutive time having scored 273 runs.

7. AUSTRALIA – 2021 T20 World Cup vs New Zealand

- The 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup was the seventh ICC Men’s T20 World Cup tournament, with the matches played in the United Arab Emirates and Oman from 17 October to 14 November 2021.
- Originally the event was scheduled to be held in Australia from 18 October to 15 November 2020 but this tournament had been postponed, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But later it got confirmed that India would host the 2021 tournament .However, in June 2021, the ICC announced that the tournament had been moved to the UAE due to growing concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic situation in India .
- The 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Final was match played at Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai, UAE, on 14 November 2021 to determine the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup winner. It was played between New Zealand and Australia. Australia won the match by 8 wickets to win their maiden T20 World Cup title.
1ST INNINGS –
- Australia won the toss and elected to field. New Zealand started off very well, with Daryl Mitchell and Martin Guptill . At 28 runs, Mitchell however got out to to Josh Hazelwood . Williamson then joined with Guptill started scoring fast to keep up the run rate. In the 12th over, Zampa struck to remove Guptill, for 28 too. Williamson then started scoring along with Glenn Phillips .
- Hazlewood struck again to remove Phillips and Williamson in the second and fifth ball of the 18th over, respectively. Neesham and Seifert scored at death overs to take New Zealand to a total of 172 for 4. Williamson top-scored for New Zealand with 85, equalling Marlon Samuel’s record of 85* against England in 2016, in a T20 World Cup final.
2ND INNINGS –
- Chasing 173 to win, Australia suffered a setback when Aaron Finch got out during the third ball of the 3rd over. Mitchell Marsh and David Warner joined and started to build a solid partnership. In the second ball of the 13th over, Boult bowled Warner out for 53 (38) . With 66 runs needed from 46 balls, Marsh was joined by Maxwell.
- Maxwell reverse hit Southee for the winning runs, winning their maiden T20 World Cup with 7 balls to spare. By doing so, Australia had scored the highest total in a T20 World Cup final. Marsh was acknowledged as the player of the match, while Warner won the Player of the Tournament.

8 . ENGLAND – 2022 T20 World Cup vs Pakistan

- The 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup was scheduled to be the eighth ICC Men’s T20 World Cup tournament, scheduled to be played from 16 October to 13 November 2022 in Australia .Originally, the tournament was to be held in 2020. However, in July 2020 tournament got postponed, due to the COVID-19 pandemic . And in August 2020, it got confirmed that Australia would host the rearranged tournament in 2022 . Hosts Australia were now also the defending champions .
- The 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Final was played at Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne, Australia, on 13 November 2022 between England and Pakistan, with both the teams eyeing their second ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title. England won the match by 5 wickets to win the title for the second time. Having also won the 2019 Cricket World Cup Final, England became the first men’s team to hold the ODI World Cup and T20 World Cup titles at the same time.
1ST INNINGS –
- Pakistan were asked to bat first and scored a total of 137 runs for the fall of 8 wickets. Shan Masood was Pakistan’s top scorer with 38 runs.
- Pakistan in Powerplay scored 39 runs for the loss of 1 wicket and reached 50 runs in 7.6 overs, 100 runs in 14.3 overs .
- Final Score – Pakistan – 137/8 in 20.0 overs
2ND INNINGS –
- In the second innings, England finished the six-over powerplay with 49 runs for 3 wickets and reached 100 runs in 15.4 overs (94 balls).
- In the 13th over, the game changed when Shaheen Afridi slid forwards to take a catch off Shadab Khan, dismissing Harry Brook. Shaheen jarred his right knee in the process. With England needing 41 runs off five overs, Shaheen attempted to return for his third over after receiving some treatment but pulled out of his run-up and then Iftikhar Ahmed replaced him as the bowler and proved to be expensive.
- Ben Stokes made the match-winning unbeaten 50 runs off 47 balls (5 x 4, 1 x 6).
England’s Sam Curran took 3 wickets for 12 runs, eventually earning both Man of the Match and Player of the Tournament honors.
Ben Stokes scored his maiden T20I fifty and then hit the winning run with six balls to spare. Stokes also became just the fifth player to record half centuries in multiple ICC World Cup (ODI or T20) finals after Australia’s Adam Gilchrist, Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara, India’s Gautam Gambhir and the West Indies’ Marlon Samuels.
